3 Types Of Shooting Ear Protection

Did you know the sound of a single gunshot around an unprotected ear can lead to permanent hearing loss or could also cause a hissing or humming in the ears? If you have fired some gunshots in the past without damaging the ear doesn't mean it won't cause any problems in the future. Any sound over 85dB can be dangerous to a human ear and most gunshots average over 150dB. So it is really important to wear ear protection during gunfire.

Why You Should ALWAYS wear Ear Protection during the Shooting Sessions:

Wearing Shooting Ear protection is not just for protecting your ears but it is also good for the regular activities during your shooting practices. The Electronic Ear Muffs will not only reduce the sound of the shots fired but amplifies the low noises which help in having conversations without the hassle to remove it every time. There are basically 3 types of shooting ear protectors available for your casual shooting practices.

The first one is the standard Ear Muffs a.k.a Passive Hearing Protection, the other is the Electronic Ear Protection and last but not the least Earplugs. The cups of both of these muffs are filled with foam which decreases the sound wave coming from a gunshot. But the Electronic Ear protectors had microphones which muffle only loud noise and softer sounds are still audible. Earplugs, just like earphones are to be worn in the ear.

Standard Ear Muffs As mentioned above uses sound absorbing foam only which reduces the loud noise level to an extent. As a result, it is very difficult to hear any sound with less volume levels and you won't be able to hear anything going on in your environment, be it the conversation your buddies are having, sounds of birds etc. Besides one can easily tell if you are wearing Non-electronic ear muffs as you will be shouting just to have a normal conversation. But if you don't wear any Ear Protection during shooting, people will soon be shouting at you all the time.

Besides, these ear muffs are relatively cheap and more affordable than the most of the Electronic ones which make them a great pick if you are on a budget. Electronic Ear Muffs (Passive Hearing Protection) also come with sound absorbing foam. But what makes them electronic is the modern technology used in these muffs. Now, where they stand out from the Passive muff is the microphones on these cups. These microphones pick up the loud sound and amplifies it and sends them to the shooter's ear electronically.

Most of them have volume controls which help them to play with the sound levels according to their own taste. Most of the modern Electronic Ear muffs use high-quality amplifiers which compress the sound. But keeping in mind these babies don't come cheap, at least some of them. If you want all the goodies then they can get quite expensive. But whats worse, spending good earned money for a better ear protection or losing your ability to hear permanently.

Previous generation's Ear muffs or the today's inexpensive ones features a thing called "stop gate". This simply just shuts down the amplifier when a loud sound is heard. And when the sound stops the amplifier would turn back on. It works fine but the audio heard might not be of a good quality and it sometimes gets confused if there are loud and soft noises going on continuously. Earplugs are great as long as you are shooting outdoors. But they don't go well with indoor shooting or in a noisy environment and don't provide enough Ear Protection. But if you were to wear Electronic muffs over the plugs then you will get the maximum ear protection than you would have imagined.
